The “Build For Africa” hackathon opens registrations for the 2023 edition

September 29, 2023]- The “Build For Africa” hackathon is a virtual hackathon for anyone interested in building innovative applications and tools to solve African problems powered by Bitcoin and the Lightning network. 

Organised by Btrust Builders in partnership with the Africa Bitcoin Conference 2023, the hackathon will serve as a launchpad for collaborative innovation of Bitcoin and Lightning-related projects, propelling Bitcoin adoption across the African continent. To join this exciting competition, individuals need to register on the Eventornado platform by filling the registration form. Once complete, participants can enter their ideas to the Build for Africa Hackathon and compete for loads of awesome prizes!

What The Hackathon Aims To Achieve

The key objective of the hackathon is to build new solutions that solve African challenges powered by Bitcoin & Lightning Network to increase adoption in Africa.Specifically, the hackathon will showcase the practical use cases of Bitcoin to uniquely address African challenges, and give more Africans creative confidence to engage with Bitcoin as builders and producers.

Who Can Participate

What’s truly exciting about this hackathon is its inclusivity; it’s not limited to developers alone. Everyone part of the Bitcoin ecosystem or beyond is welcome to join. You can participate in the hackathon if you are a:

– Bitcoin & Lightning Developer

– Subject Matter Expert

– Generic Application Developer

– Business Development & Marketing Expert

– UI/UX Designer

– Content Creator

– Bitcoin Educator

– Data Scientist

– Simply curious! 

If you do not have the ability to build your idea, the team will match you with Bitcoin & Lightning developers who can help to bring them to life!

Themes of the Hackathon

The hackathon welcomes innovative ideas that solve African challenges powered by Bitcoin & Lightning across various themes including:

  • Cross-Border Settlements / Payments
  • Microtransactions and Micropayments
  • Agriculture and Food Security
  • Education and E-Learning 
  • Healthcare and Telemedicine
  • Peer-to-Peer Marketplaces
  • Social / Community Impact
  • Governance and Anti-Corruption
  • Energy and Sustainability
  • Media and Entertainment
  • Privacy Tech (KYC, Non-custodial)
  • Regulatory Frameworks
  • Business Administration Tools (payroll, CRM, etc)

How It Works

To participate, register through the Eventornado platform. Once registered, you can either submit your idea and form a team or search for an existing team to join. Registration is open until the hackathon officially commences during the week of October 16. Starting on October 16, teams will develop their ideas into solutions and prototypes over the course of a week. On October 20, teams submit their solutions and pitch decks. A jury will evaluate projects and announce finalists on October 27. 

As part of the hackathon experience, review clubs will facilitate peer-to-peer learning workshops, showcases, and discussions, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Top entries selected for the semi-finals will have the opportunity to present their projects live at the Africa Bitcoin Conference 2023 in Accra, Ghana.

The hackathon offers awesome prizes up to $10,000 (in BTC) combined! 

🥇1st place: $5,000

🥈2nd place: $2,500

🥉3rd place: $1,500

🎨Best design: $1,000
