The Nigeria Bitcoin Meetup Project will launch its first bitcoin meetup in Lagos on July 30, 2022. Bitcoin meetups are known to create a space for bitcoiners to engage and for no-coiners or those who own cryptocurrencies to learn more about bitcoin. However, the Nigeria Bitcoin Meetup Project is thinking of pushing the boundaries to challenge Nigerians to think out of the box with bitcoin.
“There’s so much more to bitcoin than it being a means of exchange and a store of value. It can be used as a tool to solve problems peculiar to Africa. The only way we will take action to solve those problems is when we start to get curious about what else we can do with bitcoin,” said Mary Imasuen, the founder and organizer of the Nigeria Bitcoin Meetup Project.
“I’ve noticed that in Nigeria when people talk about bitcoin, it’s either as an investment tool or an asset to trade in an exchange to make quick profits. But I have seen and heard about fascinating bitcoin-based solutions in different parts of the world. I believe as Nigerians and as Africans we can come up with our own unique take to the use of bitcoin and its technology.”
Mary’s conviction that bitcoin can be a tool to solve everyday problems comes from when she was challenged to think of ways she can creatively make bitcoin a part of her lifestyle.
“I remember looking at my Bitnob app and wondering how else I can creatively use bitcoin through the app. I took it like a personal challenge. Before I knew it, I had used bitcoin for more than 12 different things and I knew I had to share it with everyone else.”
Mary believes that through bitcoin meetups in Nigeria you can create a platform for people to network and encourage them to create Nigerian bitcoin-based projects.
“There’s so much potential in Nigeria and I believe that we can channel this talent in the Nigerian bitcoin space to create bitcoin-only products or services that will address Africa’s peculiar needs. All this can be borne through wholesome discussions on bitcoin.”
She also added that newbies are not excluded and that the meetup will serve as a platform where they can ask questions and get real hands-on education on bitcoin.
Through bitcoin meetups, bitcoiners traveling to Nigeria will be able to have a bitcoin community to connect with. Paco de la India, described by Forbes as “the young Indian travelling the world living on Bitcoin only” will also attend the meetup in Lagos.
